1. Even though it is forbidden to pray standing on a high place, if that high place is considered as a separate domain, it is permitted. The definition of this is when it is four amos (approximately two meters) long and four amos (approximately two meters) wide. The same applies if it is surrounded by dividing walls (at least ten tefachim high) even if it is not four amos (approximately two meters) long and four amos (approximately two meters) wide. (Shulchan Aruch 90)
2. One must open doors or windows in synagogue in the direction of Yerushalayim in order to pray facing them. It is even more true that when praying at home ideally he should ensure that he has such windows. Even though when praying a person looks downwards, nevertheless, if his concentration is disturbed he should raise his eyes heavenwards to arouse his concentration. (ibid and Mishne Berurah ibid)
