A Miscellany Including Stationery, Clocks, Noises, Baby Carriages, Remuneration and Advance Preparations

CLOCKS AND WATCHES

30.a. 1) Stopwatches and sandglasses may not be used on Shabbath or Yom Tov, except when one needs them for a person who is ill (even if he is not dangerously ill).

2) This need could arise if, for instance, one has to feed a patient at regular intervals or to measure his pulse.

30.b. These instruments (unless they form part of an ordinary clock or watch) are muktzeh under the heading of keli she-melachto le-issur.
