396. Relatives (2)

It is an obligation which is incumbent on every person to draw his relatives close as Chazal said and to rejoice at their happiness and be upset at their troubles and go in and out pf their houses. The way of people is that when they have a rich relative even if it is only a distant relative he nevertheless boasts about it to everyone and if he has a poor relative he will be embarrassed about it and will not want to support him and so makes out as if he does not know him and is not related to him. However, an honest man should bring his poor relatives close, visit them, bring them into his own house, honor and respect them, as by doing this he is making the heart of poor people happy and making the heart of downtrodden people lively, and it is a very great deed. If he distances then they will complain to Hashem about their bad lot and Hashem will fight their battles, G-d forbid.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
