Chapter 29: Laws Derived from Isaiah: Running, Walking (705)

GOING TO A PLACE IN PREPARATION FOR AFTER SHARBATH

12.a. “And respect it by not following your usual) ways, by not pursuing your business”- you should not make your way on Shabbath to a place where you will pursue your business, but the business of Heaven is permitted.

12.b. Consequently, one may, towards the end of Shabbath,

1) walk to a bus stop and wait there, with the object of boarding a bus to go and perform a mitzva immediately on the termination of Shabbath,* and

2) walk to the farthest permissible point and wait there, so that as soon as Shabbath ends one will be able to go beyond this limit, with the object of

a) picking an ethrog off the tree or

b) buying a lulav to make up arba’a minim for the festival of Sukkoth.
