Chapter 29: Laws Derived from Isaiah: Commerce (706)

CARRYING ON ONE’S EVERYDAY AFFAIRS

13.a. “Not pursuing your business”- your business is forbidden; a person should not pursue his everyday affairs on Shabbath.

13.b. A considerable number of detailed laws stem from this general prohibition, as will be explained in the following paragraphs.

14. It is forbidden on Shabbath to check, in a shop, a field or any other place of work, or even in one’s home, to see what is lacking and will need to be done there once Shabbath has terminated. (See, however, the limitations on this prohibition expressed in paragraph 7 above and paragraph 65 below.)

The halachot are taken from the book 'Shemirath Shabbath Kehilchatha - English Edition' under the authority of the Feldheim Publishers. All rights are reserved for the heirs of the author, the late Rabbi Y. Neuwirth ZT"L, and for Feldheim Publishers. “Shabbos is capable of having mercy upon us, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu will gather us from our exile. And were Yisrael to observe two Shabbasos properly, they would immediately be redeemed” (Zohar Chadas, Vayeshev)
