MEASURING AND WEIGHING ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV
32.a. There is a Rabbinical prohibition (subject to exceptions specified in the paragraphs which follow) against measuring and weighing on Shabbath or Yom Tov.
32.b. It applies even to measuring with a vessel which is not specially designed for that purpose.
32.c. Measuring and weighing are forbidden whether they are done
1) for the purpose of buying or selling or
2) for one’s own personal use, and not in any way in connection with buying or selling.
32.d. One may consequently not weigh or measure
1) for the purpose of preparing food on Shabbath or
2) to ascertain the amount of flour one needs when baking a cake on Yom Tov.
32.e. See also paragraphs 40 to 42 below.
33.a. The prohibition against measuring is not trans-greased by counting the number of standard-size floor tiles in a room.
33.b. One may count the tiles even if one’s intention is to ascertain the size of the room for the purpose of planning the furniture layout.
