104. Trust (a) /הבטחה

“Trust” — that is, trust in Hashem — is a blessed trait, it brings joy to the body and rest to the soul. Having trust in Hashem does not mean that the person trusts that Hashem will do for him whatever he would like, and that no evil will befall him, for if this should be the person’s trust, then sometimes the person’s hopes will be dashed. For there are many righteous individuals who are afflicted and tormented with harsh suffering; many of them are poor and do not even have their basic food necessities, or they suffer from many other types of hardships that exist in the world.

Rather, the main idea of trust in Hashem is that one trusts that whatever Hashem does is for the good, and that He knows what is truly best for the person. For man only sees superficially with his eyes, what is bad he might think is good, and what is good he thinks is bad. But Hashem knows what is good for the person for his service to Hashem and what the person needs in order to perfect his soul and spirit. Therefore one who trusts in Hashem willfully accepts whatever befalls him, and he accepts everything with joy and a happy heart, since he is confident that no evil comes from Heaven, only good. He therefore casts all his hope to Hashem, and it is to Him that he looks for assistance, that he not toil in life for naught. He will not insist to get his way, nor will he preoccupy himself with all sorts of self-advancing thoughts or of sorrowful thoughts about the vicissitudes of time. Rather, he will believe with perfect faith that everything is from Heaven, and that there is nothing that can hold Hashem back from assisting a person; it is He Who gives strength to be successful, and He does the will of those who fear Him, without them even being aware [of all the things He does for them], and without them worrying about anything.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
