111 – Bestowing Kindness / Part II, Chapter Seventeen (e)

The trait of tzedakah is so great that it is equated with the Torah, for the word ashrei, “praiseworthy” is used in connection with the Torah Praiseworthy is the man…. his desire is in the Torah of Hashem (Tehillim 1:1-2)], and regarding tzedakah, as well, we find the term ashrei Praiseworthy are those who maintain justice, who perform righteousness in every time (ibid. 106:3)]. Just as the word “praiseworthy” with regard to Torah teaches that the person who studies it] is destined to be a member of the World to Come, so, too, the word “praiseworthy” said with regard to tzedakah teaches that one who does tzedakah is a member of the World to Come.

Similarly, with regard to Torah study it says, If you will follow My decrees…. I will provide peace in the land (Vayikrah 26:3-6), and with regard to tzedakah it is written, The product of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quiet and security forever. My people will live in a peaceful domain and in secure dwellings and in tranquil resting places (Yeshayah 32:17-18).

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
