Up to this point we have discussed the duties of the person lending his utensils. We now turn to address the duties of the borrower: He must be very careful to not use the object in any manner different than the way the owner allowed him to use it. If he does, he is called a thief. Included in this is to not use the item for longer than the owner allowed. One who uses another person’s utensil without his knowledge, is likewise called a thief.
Also, the borrower must be careful to not lend out the item he borrowed to others, even if it is within the time the lender allotted, and all the more so if it is after the loan expired.
As long as the object is in the hands of the borrower, even if it is after the loan period, it is the borrower’s obligation to protect it well. During the duration of the loan, if the item broke – even if it was not his fault at all – he must pay for the item.
