Although it is proper to do the mitzvah of giving tzedakah and doing acts of chessed-kindness purely for the sake of Heaven, nevertheless, a person who senses himself that he is doing it for his own sake – that he should succeed in his business, or to earn the respect of people – he should not refrain because of that from keeping these mitzvos. For our Sages have explicitly taught that, one should always be engaged in Torah and mitzvos even if it is not for their own sake i.e., without pure motives] since through doing things not for their own sake, one comes to do them for their own sake.” And even a mitzvah done in this manner draws the kindness of Hashem over the world albeit not to the same extent as chessed done purely for the sake of Heaven]. Our Sages said that even when a person loses a coin and a poor person found it – the Holy One sets aside reward for this.
