145 – The mitzvah of visiting the sick (a) / Part III, Chapter three

Aside from the fact that Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick, is a form of the general mitzvah of doing chessed-kindness, our Sages instructed us about it separately, to teach us that even a person who shares the same mazal as the sick person, and who therefore takes a sixtieth of the patient’s illness when he visits the sick person, must nevertheless go and visit the patient.

There is no measure that limits or quantifies the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim. Even a great person is obligated to visit a sick person of much lower stature. Likewise, the mitzvah can be done even several times a day with the same patient, as long as doing so is not a burden on the sick person.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
