When Chazal said “Jealousy of wise people increases wisdom!”, this was meant when it causes the one who is jealous to want to become great like the other. Every person is obligated to say “When will my deeds reach the level of the deeds of Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov?”. The reason for this is not to try and be like them, nor is it for honor and glory or for reward, but only in order to please Hashem. A person who is pure, and all of his wish and will is only to please his Creator, will say “Who would allow that the whole nation of Hashem would be prophets when Hashem will put His spirit”-the correct spirit-inside them. With this they will become wise in the Torah, and increase and become great in good deeds. And even if I do not merit this, at least others will give pleasure to our Father in heaven.
This is even more true in this world, where all the advantages one person has more than the next are emptiness and wreckage of spirit. What does one gain from all of his toil, when he works in order to receive riches or honor, it is all the emptiest of emptiness; all is empty. This is clear to anyone who has even a little brain in his skull. In truth they said, “Who is rich? One who is happy with his lot.”, and he will always be happy, and love and cherish all people. Fortunate is he in this world and he will have goodness in the next.
