25 – The Mitzvah of Lending / Chapter Two

1. All Jews are obligated to keep the mitzvah of giving loans. Man or woman, wealthy or poor – each person must lend what they can afford, since the Torah does not specify an amount of how much to lend. It is thus similar to tzedakah which is an obligation upon all.

2. A married woman may not lend out her husband’s money without his consent, unless it is only a small amount that people are not particular about, or even a large sum, if she knows [from experience] that her husband would agree to it. She may, however, lend household items and the like, which are commonly lent to neighbors, even without her husband’s knowledge.
