275. Sweetness

A person whose mouth speaks soft words is sweeter than honey, and his palate is sweet. Such a man will be accepted by Hashem and the creations and they will be happy with him, and his words will be listened to. He will increase peace with everyone, and with his wife and household members, for “A soft answer deflects anger!”. This is especially true in these generations when no one accepts authority that a man who becomes angry will only have achieved his anger and nothing else. If only they would listen to the voice of those who whisper with sweet speech and extra love, as they explain the verse “Rebuke a wise man and he will love you!”, that the effective way of rebuking is by telling the other person that you know that he is a wise and important man and it does not become him to do such an act. This is the way that a Rav should conduct himself with the people of his town, a man with his friend, a father with his sons and a man with his wife. Even if they do terrible things to him and speak roughly, he should answer with soft speech, sweet lips and a happy face, as it says “A soft tongue will break a load!”, and this is a great rule, a medicine for life, it is good for heaven and for the creations, good for this world and for the next. Fortunate is the man who does this for he will be a vessel holding blessing and peace.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
