284. Revenge and Bearing grudges (2)

Many people think that although I am capable of not taking revenge against my friend, but not to bear a grudge at all and not to rejoice at all inside when the person who seeks to do me harm falls is impossible, and people say that this commandment is only possible for heavenly angels who have no competition between them nor hatred and jealousy. In truth, this is not the case, as anything that Hashem commanded us to do, we are capable of doing, as the Torah was not given to the angels. One who thinks profoundly about this commandment will find good reasons for this commandment, as when a living person considers and believes with full trust that all good and bad that happens to a person (whether it came about through a person or through heaven) comes from heaven, and nobody can be good or bad to him in any way whatsoever without it having been decreed in heaven, and no person hurts his finger down here without a decree from above, and Hashem has many messengers, and good deeds are performed by those who merit them and bad deeds by the guilty, it follows that anyone who does him either good or bad is only doing it because Hashem sent him. When this will be fixed in his heart with full belief, his heart will understand that he cannot blame his friend, as King Dovid said “Hashem told him to curse!”, and in the end he will receive his punishment from Hashem. A person must always pray that Hashem should cause all of the sinners of Klal Yisrael to repent, and not cause anyone to be punished because of him, and not rejoice at the fall of his enemies, as when wicked people feel pain, the Divine Presence feels it with them.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
