294. Test

We pray every day that Hashem should not bring us to a test. The meaning of this is that we are asking that He should not allow the evil inclination to test us, by trying to persuade us to transgress the will of our Creator, in the way that He tested King David of blessed memory, and that He should not test us with physical trials and tribulations in the way that He tested Iyov. There is no person who Hashem does not test at all; a rich man with his riches and a poor man with his poverty, a wise man with his wisdom and a man of trials and tribulations with those very trials and tribulations, a merchant with his business and a professional with his profession. Every day and at all times during the day a person is being tested, as his inclination is becoming stronger that he should commit a sin, or to transgress a positive commandment with thought, speech or deed. One must be like a warrior to conquer one’s inclination, to withdraw one’s hand from any hint of sin and to fulfil all good obligations in the correct manner.

It follows that since it is impossible to live without being tested, that one should pour oneself out with speech in front of our G-d, that if and when He brings us to be tested, that He should help us to withstand the test for the sake of His great Name. The Jewish servant should say, “I love my Master and I want wholeheartedly to be given the trials of Iyov as a test for the sake of His Name, but I should not be distracted from His service and Torah. It is therefore good after each prayer and supplication to ask Hashem to do with us that which is good in His eyes for His service and to cause Him pleasure.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
