It is well-known that one of the six hundred and thirteen commandments is that every man of Klal Yisrael must write a Torah scroll for himself. One who Hashem has favored and has the ability, should not hold back from fulfilling this commandment. Even though the halachic authorities have written that nowadays the main obligation is to buy books of Torah law and commentators on the Torah, according to the hidden part of the Torah everyone has an obligation to write a valid Torah scroll.
Those who buy one in partnership, or members of a group who get together to buy a scroll for the synagogue, have not fulfilled this commandment, for the obligation is on every individual to write one for himself.
