324. Riches (3)

A rich man should not take credit for his riches unless he is using it for kindness, justice and righteousness. His heart should not be high (he should not be arrogant), and he should do everything he can in order to do good for others with his body and his money, and his eye should not be satisfied when he spends money. He should also look after himself and his flesh and blood, and wear what he has, honor his wife and increase a little in the honor of his house. He should make a house in a way which is average according to his honor, to the extent that he should be able to be relaxed to serve Hashem and to receive visitors.

He should also spend his money to minimize his work and effort, and he may have servants who serve him inside and out so that he should be free to immerse himself in Torah and to serve his Creator. He should spend his money freely and not skimp when using it to avoid travelling and to avoid dangerous places and to avoid relying on a miracle. He should live a peaceful life, as what is the point for a person if he has to work very hard and Hashem gives him riches and possessions, if he will live a life of pain and not work hard in Torah. He should therefore choose to be happy with his lot and enjoy his wealth according to the level of blessing that Hashem has given him, and the things a person gives will broaden for him both this world and the next, and it should be wealth guarded for its owners for his good both for his body and his soul.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
