444. Neighbor (2)

Amongst the basic rules between neighbors who want to live together in love, brotherhood, peace and friendship are that they should not exaggerate and take advantage of each other by entering each other’s courtyards (property) at all times and spending long times sitting together, unless they know with absolute certainty that they are both happy with this, as brothers living together. One should not take advantage of his neighbor by borrowing many things from him, unless it is a time of great necessity when he is absolutely unable to buy those things and he cannot manage without those things in which case he may borrow it from his neighbor. And in the event that he does borrow something, he should hurry to return it as early as humanly possible, in the exact state and in the same way that he borrowed it in the first place, not at all less and he should not return something dirty. One should not get upset with his neighbor for insignificant things, and he should make a special effort to bear the burden of his friend and help him both in body and money both at the time of his happiness and his sorrow.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
