It is well-known that the ultimate purpose for man is that he merit to dwell before Hashem in the World to Come and bask in the glow of His Presence. For this is the true delight and the greatest pleasure possible. But all this depends on the person himself. If during his lifetime he clings to Hashem with all his might – as is written, to cleave to him (Devarim 11:22), which, as our Sages explain, means that man should attach himself to the good and kind traits of the Holy One – then he will merit to dwell in the presence of Hashem. But if during his lifetime his way was to not do good for others, which is the opposite of the Holy One’s traits, then what merit could he have to become attached to Hashem after his death?
When a person realizes how much he must love this trait, then when an opportunity arises to do kindness to another, he will treat it as the greatest treasure, and he will do it in the best possible way, such that the recipient won’t feel any embarrassment from it. Hashem will bless him for this. More, if he loves this trait, then he will also urge others to do kindness.
