SCRIPTURAL SOURCE OF THE PROHIBITIONS
1.a. Certain things are prohibited on Shabbath or Yom Tov despite the fact that they neither resemble any activity forbidden by the Torah nor lead to the performance of such an activity.
1.b. These prohibitions are derived from verses 13 and 14 in Chapter 58 of Isaiah:
“If you draw back your foot because of Shabbath, if you restrain yourself] from doing that which you desire on My holy day, if you] call Shabbath a joy, if you call] God’s sanctified day] honored, and respect it by not following your usual] ways, by not pursuing your business and by not] speaking about forbidden] matters, then shall you rejoice in God and I shall make you ride over the heights of the earth and shall feed you the inheritance of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of God has spoken”.
1.c. Since their direct source is one of the Prophets, they are treated with the severity appropriate to Torah (as opposed to Rabbinical) prohibitions.
1.d. The rules governing them are the same on both Shabbath and Yom Tov.
