REMUNERATION FOR SERVICES RENDERED ON SHABBATH OR YOM TOV
54.a. An arrangement to perform services for a person on Shabbath, in consideration for services which that person will perform for one on that or another day, is likewise not permitted.
54.b. 1) It is, however, allowed where the consideration consists merely of looking after something in order to prevent loss or injury, and no direct, material gain is conferred.
2) A person may, thus, babysit for a neighbor on the understanding that the neighbor will babysit for him on another occasion.
55.a. If one has to be on duty on Shabbath, for example in a hospital or in the kitchen of a kibbutz, one may exchange one’s turn for a different spell of duty on a weekday or on Shabbath.
55.b. This is because neither party obtains a direct, material gain over and above his release from having to be on duty at the time originally appointed.
