Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov
FEEDING AND OTHERWISE ATTENDING TO ANIMALS
26.a. Geese which are being stuffed and are no longer capable of eating by themselves may be caused suffering by a failure to stuff them.
26.b. Whenever possible, they should be stuffed immediately before the commencement of Shabbath or Yom Tov.
and immediately after its termination, so as to avoid stuffing them on Shabbath or Yom Tov.
26.c. 1) Where this is not sufficient for them, and they will be caused suffering if not fed on Shabbath or You Tov, one should have them stuffed by a non-Jew, but he should only stuff them once, in the middle of Shabbath or Yom Tov.
2) There are those who, when there is no non-Jew available, have the geese stuffed by a Jew, and some authorities would support this lenient view, but, if a Jew is employed,
a) the machine used should be hand-operated or activated by a timer (time-switch),
b) it is advisable for the Jew to be a boy aged less than thirteen or a girl aged less than twelve and
c) the geese should, of course, be stuffed only once in the middle of Shabbath or Yom Tov.
