Laws Relating to Animals on Shabbath and Yom Tov

MILKING

49.a. A person wishing to milk an animal should clean its teats by spraying water on them.

49.b. If this is not possible, he should at all events not clean them with a wet cloth, but

1) with a dry cloth or

2) with a non-absorbent, synthetic material (either wet or dry) whose fibers are not close enough together to hold water.

50. One should not grease one’s hands with an ointment before milking, but one may oil them.
