Chapter 18

Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv*

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

1.a. 1) As mentioned in Chapter 17, paragraphs 6 and 7, the Torah prohibits the transfer of objects on Shabbath

a) from reshuth ha-rabbim to reshuth ha-yachid,

b) from reshuth ha-yachid to reshuth ha-rabbim or

c) within reshuth ha-rabbim over a distance of four amoth or more.

2) This Torah prohibition (as distinct from the wider Rabbinical prohibition) is contravened only if one transfers an object in the same way as one would during the rest of the week.

1.b. It will be seen in the succeeding paragraphs that there is no prohibition against the transfer of an article of clothing or an ornament (or, to be more precise, a tachshit, as defined in paragraph 11 below) in the manner in which it is usually worn.

1.c. There is a Rabbinical prohibition against the transfer of articles in a manner not commonly employed during the rest of the week.
