Chapter 18

Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv*

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN

3.a. As already mentioned, it is permitted to transfer an article of clothing from one place to another in the course of wearing it in the usual way.

3.b. For this purpose, an article of clothing comprises anything which a person wears

1) that either

a) protects his body or

b) serves the needs of his body in some other way

and

2) that it is the custom of the time to wear in that way, in that particular place.

4. It is, consequently, permitted to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim

a. with a coat worn over one’s shoulders like a cape (that is to say without one’s arms in the sleeves),

b. wearing gloves or a muff on one’s hands (although it is best to attach them to one’s coat by means of a cord, so that one will not be carrying them in the usual way if one unthinkingly removes them in reshuth ha-rabbim), or

c. wearing earmuffs in very cold weather.
