Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv
Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.
ARTICLES WHICH ARE WORN
20. One is allowed to go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing
a. a sling to support a painful arm,
b. absorbent cotton (cotton-wool)* in an aching ear,
c. a sanitary napkin (towel) or tampon, to prevent discomfort through the body’s being soiled at the time of menstruation, or
d. a rupture belt or other surgical belt.
21. One may also go out into reshuth ha-rabbim wearing
a. orthopedic supports inside one’s shoes (but not in open sandals, unless the support is built-in or firmly attached),
b. insoles inside one’s shoes (but not in open sandals),
whether they are intended
1) to keep the feet warm,
2) to absorb perspiration or
3) to provide a better fit,
or
c. a hat with paper tucked into its lining to reduce its size.

*One may not roll up absorbent cotton into a ball on Shabbath or Yom Tov and insert it into the ear, but there is nothing wrong with thrusting a piece of absorbent cotton, in its existing form, into the ear.
