Chapter 18

Specific Laws Relating to the Transfer of Objects from One Place to Another on Shabbath, Where There Is No Eiruv

Specific laws relating to the transfer of objects from one place to another on Yom Tov are dealt with in Chapter 19.

MISCELLANEOUS RULES CONCERNING

THE TRANSFER OF OBJECTS

45.a. A person should not go out into reshuth ha-rabbim on Friday afternoon, close to the commencement of Shabbath, with something in his pocket or held in his hand, lest he forget and continue to carry it about with him on Shabbath,

45.b. Similarly, one should refrain from putting a watch, a handkerchief or any other article into one’s pocket on Shabbath, even in the house, lest one forget to remove it before going out into reshuth ha-rabbim.

46.a. At the commencement of Shabbath, clothes should be checked to see that one is not carrying anything which one might come to take out into reshuth ha-rabbim (or which is muktzeh and must not be moved on Shabbath).

46.b. On Shabbath too, one should look through one’s clothes before going out into a place where carrying things about is forbidden.
