Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
MUKTZEH MEI-CHAMATH GUFO
41.a. 1) The pieces of a broken article which, in their existing state, are not fit to be used for any purpose are muktzeh and may not be moved, whether the article was broken on Shabbath or during the week.
2) An example is a shoe from which the sole or the heel has become totally detached, so that it cannot be worn at all.
3) Nevertheless, if such pieces of a broken article are in a position where they might cause injury to passers-by, one may move them to the side.
41.b. 1) The pieces of a broken article which are fit to be used (even for a purpose other than that for which the original article was designed) are not muktzeh, whether or not one has the intention of using them again, unless
a) fragments of this kind are normally thrown away or
b) their owner actually threw them away before Shabbath commenced.
2) The mere act of throwing usable fragments away on Shabbath itself does not make them muktzeh.
41.c. Unbroken articles are not made muktzeh by being thrown away, even before Shabbath.
