Chapter 20

Categories of Muktzeh

Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.

BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR

56.a. An article does not become a basis la davar ha-assur unless the muktzeh object is directly placed on, or suspended from, the article itself.

56.b. 1) If the muhtzeh object is placed on a subsidiary part of the article which serves a separate function, only the subsidiary part would become a basis la-davar ha-assur.

2) One would thus be permitted to move the article as a whole, subject to the rules set out in paragraph 47b above.

3) An example is the putting of a muktzeh object into an ordinary pocket of the type which is sewn into a garment and hangs inside it. (See paragraph 71 below, from which it will be seen that a great deal of importance attaches to the way in which the pocket is made.)

The halachot are taken from the book 'Shemirath Shabbath Kehilchatha - English Edition' under the authority of the Feldheim Publishers.
