Chapter 20
Categories of Muktzeh
Laws specifically relating to muktzeh on Yom Tov are explained in Chapter 21.
BASIS LA-DAVAR HA-ASSUR
59.a. If, at the commencement of Shabbath, a table has on it candlesticks containing burning candles, the table becomes a basis la-davar ha-assur.
59.b. The table may not be moved, even after the candles have gone out and the candlesticks have been removed (for example by a non-Jew), unless, at the commencement of Shabbath, there is also on the table a non-muktzeh item of importance which one requires for Shabbath, such as the Shabbath loaves.*
59.c. At all events, one may eat at the table and use it without moving it from its present position. (See Chapter 22, paragraph 32.)
59.d. Drawers contained in the table may be opened, closed and used.
59.e. One may also lengthen or shorten the table, if it is of the expanding kind, by inserting or extracting leaves, or by raising or lowering extension flaps, so long as, in so doing. one does not move that section on which the candlesticks are (or were) standing.
