Derech Hashem, Part 4, Ch. 2 – 47

The prerequisite to receiving this blessing is fear of Hashem when learning. Reading verses disconnected to Hashem has no effect, and is no different than other types of wisdom. The blessing stems from the connection of Torah with Hashem on the highest level possible, so a person should learn with great trepidation, as he is approaching Hashem and bringing down His ultimate blessing. He should rejoice in the closeness and be very fearful.

When a person learns he should not be light-headed, and should treat the Torah and sefarim with great respect. If he is aware how he is standing and serving before Hashem, he will attain maximum benefit from his learning. If he doesn’t, not only will he and creation not benefit from it, but his treating the holy as profane will be considered a sin. To the degree of his fear and respect while learning, so will be the effect it has on him.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
