Erecting Shelters and Partitions (578)

Chapter 24

Laws Relating to the Erection of Protective Shelters and of Partitions on Shabbath and Yom Tov

TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE SHELTERS

16.a. As we have seen in paragraph 5 above, it is forbidden to erect a tent on Shabbath or Yom Tov

16.b. Nevertheless, if a tent has been standing since before Shabbath or Yom Tov, one may sometimes go so far as to

1) let down its walls and

2) secure* them at the bottom, to prevent them from flapping about in the wind.

16.c. This may be done only if it is usual for the walls in question to be unfastened and raised at frequent intervals.

16.d. If they are liable to be unfastened and raised only once every few days, it is forbidden to lower and secure them on Shabbath or Yom Tov.

______________

*The walls may, of course, be secured only in a manner which is allowed, for example by tying a bow or by slipping a loop over a hook.
