Hilchos Pesach – 10 / searching for chametz

1. Synagogues and Torah study halls must be searched for chametzby their gabbaim (caretakers) because children bring chametz there. The fact that the place was cleaned is not sufficient; rather, a proper inspection must be conducted on the night of the fourteenth using the light of a candle (Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah 433).

2. However, the gabbaim cannot nullify the chametzin those places and declare it ownerless because the chametz that is there does not belong to them (ibid.).
