Hilchos Purim – 10 / Reading the Megillah (j)

1. One who readsthe Megillah in a drowsy state, but did not actually fall asleep, does fulfill his obligation. But one who listenes to the Megillah in a drowsy state, does not fulfill his obligation because it is inevitable that he missed hearing some of the words (Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah 690).

2. If the Reader mistakenly read a word incorrectly in a manner that did not change the meaning of the word – such as that he read, Yehudi’im instead of Yehudim— he does not have to go back and say the word again correctly. But if his mistake was one that changed the meaning of the word, he must go back (ibid.).

“Moshe established for Yisrael, that they should inquire and teach the issue of the day, the halachos of Pesach on Pesach, the halachos of Atzeres on Atzeres, the halachos of chag on the chag” (Megilla 32)
