Chapter 23

Housekeeping and Use of Domestic Facilities on Shabbath and Yom Tov.

HYGIENE

17.a. It is not permitted to scatter sand over a puddle which has formed in the yard.

17.b. One is, however, allowed to cover the puddle with a ice board or some other item, provided

1) the board or other item is not muktzeh and

2) one does not have the intention of leaving it there permanently.

17.c.1) One may scatter cinders or sand to prevent people from slipping on an icy patch of ground.

2) If one knows in advance that it is likely to be icy, one should prepare the cinders or sand before Shabbath or Yom Tov

3) Where none has been prepared, one may use such cinders or sand as are available, despite the fact that they are muktzeh. (See Chapter 25, paragraphs 8 and 9.)
