Laws Derived from Isaiah: Reading (726)

Chapter 29

Laws Derived from Isaiah: Running, Walking, Commerce, Measuring, Reading, Speaking

WHAT ONE IS FORBIDDEN TO READ ON SHABBATH AND YOM TOV

49.a. One may not read a list of guests one has invited to a Shabbath or Yom Tov meal, and the same applies to any other lists one has prepared.

49.b. Two reasons have been given for this prohibition:

1) There is a fear that one could come to add to the list or delete something from it.

2) The Rabbis were afraid one might come to read papers connected with one’s day-to-day business.

50. For the reading of printer’s proofs see Chapter 28 paragraph 13.

The halachot are taken from the book 'Shemirath Shabbath Kehilchatha - English Edition' under the authority of the Feldheim Publishers. All rights are reserved for the heirs of the author, the late Rabbi Y. Neuwirth ZT"L, and for Feldheim Publishers. Copying or distribution for commercial purposes is prohibited; distribution for the benefit of the public is allowed, without any compensation.
