Laws of Grinding, Chopping, Crushing and Grating on Yom Tov (111)

Chapter 7

3.a. Food which

1) grows from the ground and

2) will not spoil altogether if ground, chopped, crushed or grated before the Festival, but

3) will lose some of its flavor,

such as coffee beans, horseradish or spices, may be so prepared on Yom Tov, but

1) only in a manner which varies from that usually adopted on a normal weekday and

2) only for use on that same day of Yom Tov.

(See paragraph 7 below, regarding the use of a kitchen mincer or grinder.)

3.b. Thus, for example, if one is accustomed, on a normal weekday, to grate horseradish on a grater held over a plate, one should, on Yom Tov, grate it

1) over a piece of paper or

2) over a cloth or

3) over a plate, but with the grater held upside down.
