Laws of Grinding, Chopping, Crushing and Grating on Yom Tov (112)

Chapter 7

4.a. Food which

1) grows from the ground and

2) will not spoil at all or lose any of its flavor if ground, chopped, crushed or grated before the Festival, such as nuts or blocks of rock-salt*, should be ground, chopped, crushed or grated before Yom Tov.

4.b. If, nonetheless, one is faced on Yom Toy with a situation where the food has not been so prepared before the Festival, one may then proceed to grind, chop, crush or grate it, even with the aid of a specially designed instrument, but

1) not with an instrument which is normally used to prepare food for several days ahead and

2) only in a manner which varies from that usually adopted on an ordinary weekday and

3) only for use on that same day of Yom Tov.

*For the purposes of these rules deposits of rock salt are regarded as growing from the ground.
