Laws of Lashon Hara / 4: 11 (46)

11. One is permitted to inquire and question someone about another fellow for the sake of a partnership, a marriage prospect or the like, even though he may hear negative things about him. However, when inquiring about another, one is required to first mention the purpose for his questions, so as not to cause the speaker to commit the sin of lashon hara by speaking with wrong intentions.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
