Laws of Lashon Hara / 4: 9-10 (45)

9. One who witnesses negative behavior in one’s friend, such as anger or haughtiness, even though this behavior is forbidden, he is nevertheless forbidden to speak about it, since most people do not realize that such behavior is forbidden, but only undesirable. Therefore one who acts in such a manner is not considered wicked.

10. However, one is permitted and even obligated to speak about this person’s behavior to one’s sons or students, and tell them about his bad character traits or about their disregard for Torah study, in order that they will keep a distance from him and not learn from his bad deeds.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
