Laws of Rechilus / 6: 1-2 (96)

1. It is forbidden to believe rechilus, even when told in front of many or publicly.

2. Even when told in the presence of the subject and the subject keeps quiet, even if he does not usually tend to keep quiet in such situations, it is forbidden to believe what is said.

The prohibition to accept rechilus is even when in the opinion of the speaker – he is speaking for a constructive purpose. How much more so, when the speaker is speaking for no constructive purpose, one is forbidden to believe him.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
