Mitzvah 101) To not tear the Robe of the Kohen

Torah Portion: Tetzaveh

[The Robe] may not be torn (Shemos 28:32).

It is a negative commandment to not tear the opening of the Kohen Gadol’s Robe, as it is written, [The Robe] may not be torn (Shemos 28:32).

Among the roots of the mitzvah is the idea that anything that is ripped is a disgraceful thing, especially [if it is visible, as in] the opening of the garment. We were therefore told to distance ourselves from this and we where enjoined about this with a negative commandment, so that when the person wearing it puts on [the Robe] he will do so with awe and trepidation, with gentleness and dignity. He will be cautions to not rip or ruin any part of it.

This commandment applies when the Holy Temple stands, to both men and women — that is anyone who purposely tears it, whether a man or women — receives lashes for doing so.
