Torah Portion: Shemini
“מבשרם לא תאכלו ואת נבלתם תשקצו” (ויקרא יא יא)
It is a negative commandment to not eat non-kosher fish, as it is written: You shall not eat of their flesh and you shall abominate their carcass (Vayikra 11:9).
Among the roots of the mitzvah is the same idea that we wrote above, regarding to the prohibition of [non-kosher] foods — that God, blessed is He, removed from His people anything that is harmful, whether cattle, fowl or fish — for the reason we said there.
This mitzvah applies in all places and at all times, to both men and women. One who transgressed this and willfully ate the volume of an olive of a non-kosher fish receives lashes. If this happened inadvertently, he is exempt.
