Mitzvah 34) – To not kill any person

Torah Portion: Yisro

Do not commit murder (Shemos 20:13).

It is a negative commandment to not kill any person among Israel, as is written, Do not commit murder.

The root of this commandment is known and obvious to all, for Hashem, may He blessed, created the world and commanded us to be fruitful and multiply so that the world be inhabited before Him, and He restrained us that we not destroy it with our own hands by murdering and annihilating the very people who inhabit the world.

This prohibition applies equally whether one kills a healthy person or a sick person on the verge of death, or even to a person in the throes of death. One who kills is liable for death.

This mitzvah applies in all places and at all times, to both men and women.
