General Rules Relating to Actions Performed by a Non-Jew on Shabbath and Yom Tov

APPLICABLE PROHIBITIONS

1.a. It is prohibited, both on Shabbath and on Yom Tov, to tell a non-Jew to perform an act for a Jew which a Jew is himself forbidden to perform.

1.b. It does not matter whether the act

1) is forbidden by the Torah itself or

2) is the subject of a Rabbinical prohibition.

1.c. It is prohibited not only

1) to tell a non-Jew on Shabbath or Yom Tov to perform the act on Shabbath or Yom Tov, but also

2) to tell him on an ordinary weekday to perform the act on Shabbath or Yom Tov, or

3) to tell him on Shabbath or Yom Tov to perform the act after Shabbath or Yom Tov.

1.d. Exceptions to the rule are detailed in this chapter and the next.
