Non-Jew: General Rules (746)

Chapter 30

General Rules Relating to Actions Performed by a Non-Jew on Shabbath and Yom Tov

APPLICABLE PROHIBITIONS

9.a. One may say to a non-Jew on Shabbath, “Why didn’t you call for me with your car last week, after Shabbath?” so that he understands that one wishes him to call for one after the current Shabbath.

9.b. Since the act is to be performed after Shabbath, one is permitted to hint in language of a peremptory character.

10.a. One may say to a non-Jew, before Shabbath begins, “Why didn’t you want to open my mail last Shabbath?” so that he understands that he is to open one’s mail on the Shabbath which is just about to start. (See, however, Chapter 29, paragraph 45.)

10.b. Peremptory language is permitted because the hint is being given before Shabbath commences.

10.c. One must not express oneself in this manner on Shabbath.

10.d. See further Chapter 31, paragraph 22.
