The wise King Solomon said, ‘(The Torah) is more valuable than pearls, and all your belongings do not compare to it’. Our Sages explained this to mean that all the valuables in the world are not worth one Torah thought. Now king Solomon was well versed in Torah, being the wisest of men, and was also very proficient in precious stones, as he testified, ‘And I collected silver and gold, royal treasures’. He was most qualified to say that one Torah idea is worth more than all the treasures of the world. His father King David similarly said, ‘they are more pleasant than the best of gold’. How can a person see such treasures up for grabs without making any effort to acquire them, when all he needs to do is open his mouth and say some words?
Therefore, a person should set himself aside a special place in his home to learn Torah, where he goes whenever he has some time, and he will be fortunate in this world and the next.
