Washing Dishes and Cleaning the Table (211)

Chapter 12

Washing Dishes and Cleaning the Table on Shabbath and Yom Tov

WASHING DISHES

8.a. On Shabbath,

1) it is forbidden to pour hot water over greasy dishes, thereby dissolving the fat which is stuck to them, but

2) they may be put into hot water in a keli sheini, where the fat will dissolve of its own accord.

8.b. On Yom Tov, both methods are permissible.

9.a. On Shabbath,

1) one must not wash dishes with scouring powder mixed with water, since this contravenes the prohibition

against kneading, but

2) one is allowed to clean them with dry scouring powder, even if one’s hands are wet,* as this is not the normal manner of kneading.

9.b. On Yom Tov, scouring powder may be used with water.

9.c. See also paragraph 11 below.

_______________

*Nevertheless, if the scouring powder will dissolve, it is advisable not to use it.
