Washing Dishes and Cleaning the Table (215)

Chapter 12

Washing Dishes and Cleaning the Table on Shabbath and Yom Tov

WASHING DISHES

16.a. It is permissible to plug up a sink with a stopper in order to prevent the water from draining out when one is washing the dishes.

16.b. 1) One may, likewise, put a perforated cover over the sink drain.

2) The fact that this will result in the filtering out of the larger pieces of refuse does not contravene the prohibition against selection, since one’s intention is solely to prevent the pipe from becoming blocked, whereas the essence of making a selection is that one wishes, at some time, to use what is selected or what is left or both.

16.c. One is also allowed to pour the water into the sink through a perforated receptacle, to avoid the spreading of refuse all over the sink.

16.d. The refuse which accumulates in this receptacle may be emptied into the waste bin.

16.e. Regarding the emptying of the waste bin see Chapter 22. paragraph 45.
